I really appreciate Paul Richard Hain's post on his work to enhance education of childeren with special needs in "regular" or mainstream classes. Paul's concern is appropriately for the education and enhanced life of these children; yet other students and teachers it seems also benefit greatly!

As someone who was "tracked" during many years of school, I have sometimes reflected on how, despite the faster pace and "advanced" subject matter I did enjoy, I did not get the full benefit of navigating and helping in classrooms with a greater diversity of learning styles and needs. It seems likely to have contribtued to making me too focused on quickness, analytical correctness, and individual effort, and insufficiently responsive to widely varrying learning styles and skills of others.

Paul's approach, if I understand correctly, creates a richer learning environment for all students and teachers because it presents them with a fuller more complex environment that demands a wider range of approaches and gretaer agility or flexibility - all important traits for life-long learning and adaptation to changes. It is - I hope Paul is not offended - profoundly communitarian.

POLICE PROTECTED SKUNK

While enjoying a slow, peaceful drive along the wooded wonderland aptly named “Historic Road,” it was easy for me to drift into thoughts of earlier centuries and imagine the folks who might have owned the massive horse ranches all around me. Adorned with ancient overgrown trees with

finger-like branches linked together above from both sides of the road, I wasn’t really watching where I was driving. But in that moment something caught my eye and I was thankful that I was just creeping along. It was suddenly necessary for me to slam on my brakes. A small, fat, furry creature was ambling across the road right in front of me. As it emerged into the twinkling sunlight, it was easy for me to assume that the fuzzy black fatso with it’s white stripe just might be a skunk, the first I had ever seen out in the wild. Could this be a couch potato skunk that has gorged itself into obesity? ...Or maybe it’s a pregnant female? Fascinated, I quickly pulled over to the side of the road, grabbed my phone and tapped the camera icon. I was working on my second video and the skunk cooperated nicely by turning toward me so I could get a full face pose. The prominent white stripe over it’s forehead traveled straight down toward a twitching nose and was symmetrically spaced between two bright eyes which seemed to be focused directly behind my car.

Evidently, the skunk saw the cop before I did because the flashing lights startled me.

"Ma’am are you OK?" was his polite greeting as the officer approached my open window.

"Yes, thank you. I’m fabulous," bubbled out my enthusiastic reply.

"Well, why the heck are you pulled over here?" he asked in a somewhat annoyed tone of voice.

Pointing to the skunk, who was now scurrying away from us across the field, I stupidly exclaimed, “Look! I made a video! It’s amazing!”

He stared down at me with a pathetic sort of exasperation.

“It’s a skunk! Ain't you never seen a skunk before?”

The answer, “No,” came out of my mouth before I could think about how ridiculously silly it probably sounded.

After checking my driver’s license and evidently verifying that I was not an escapee from a senior citizen’s mental ward or a wanted fugitive, he simply pointed out how cars come speeding down this street, so pulling over as I did might prove to be dangerous. Although I had not seen one car come down this quiet road for the entire time, fortunately the logical side of my brain kept me from commenting on this. Instead, I thanked him kindly, rolled carefully onto the road and headed home, all the while speaking aloud a prayer of gratitude for my blessings.

God, how I love Texas!

By the way, less than a week later, I got to see another skunk, this time really close up. He was a de-scented pet brought to the Aubrey Library by Safari Gregg as part of his animal show!

Yesterday, according to my World Wildlife Fund Calendar, was GRANDPARENTS DAY. My son Adam called me to wish me a HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY, and we laughed about it. His offspring, Olivia, Monty, and Archey bring great joy to us as their grandparents. They are acknowledged in my Classmate Profile.

Thanks again, Jim, for your encouragement, and the great job you and our other classmates are doing on the FORUM communication.

Dr. Joy Koch has become a dear friend over the nearly 30 years of being her patient, a fellow dog walker, a fellow ski instructor, and spiritual cohort.

Before departing Incline Village (Nevada)for my drive to North Central Texas, I was certain to get an appointment with her, mainly to give her a sad Goodbye hug.

While I was there I thought I would ask her if there was any possibility that I might be experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease? When she asked why I might think that, I explained, “Because I found my car keys in the refrigerator.”

That amazingly warm smile of hers spread across her face as she quietly asked me, “Did you put them there on purpose?“

“Of course not!” I stated emphatically. “When I thought it through, I remembered carrying a gallon of milk with both hands and setting it inside the fridge. My car keys must have been hooked on my finger. They probably slid off into the refrigerator when I set the milk down. “

“Nothing to worry about.“ Dr. Koch laughed as she spoke. “If you had Alzheimer’s, you would believe that the refrigerator is where your keys belong. Just like your purse belongs in the microwave. Many people suffer from YOUR ailment. No, it’s definitely not Alzheimer’s... It’s called Sometimers Disease!”

We both shook, laughing hard, as we hugged a very long and lovely goodbye.

water is what’s most responsible for deaths in a hurricane...

Hurricane Florence will bring lots of water--

rain will pour down in heavy rain bands

and water will come up from the ocean in storm surge.

The first rain bands of Florence are drenching the Carolina coast... rivers are jumping their banks...

Today’s weather in Oshkosh, WI is not historic-- I love seeing so many girls participating in sports-- my granddaughter just won a competitive tennis match-- Anika played her best against the best opponent she’s faced this season.

***Friday afternoon Florence was downgraded-- 350 mile wide tropical storm Florence is dragging its way through the Carolinas-- extreme flash flooding and storm surge in rivers and inlets will continue into next week.

FACTS:

Mitch McConnell who denied Merrick Garland a hearing claims Democrats are not maintaining a “standard bi-partisan” and “regular order”.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) says Kavanaugh told him that he was not at the party where the accuser says he assaulted her. (In 1991 Hatch said, “I’ve known (Clarence Thomas) for 11 years, and I don’t believe he is capable of that kind of harassment.”)

OPINION:

Rushing this confirmation through the process is not treating anyone fairly.

FACT:

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R- IA) announced that Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford have been invited to testify under oath at a public hearing before the panel Monday, September 24th.

OPINION:

The Senate should take a step back-- a search for truth takes time: Let's hear the testimony before we make a decision.

The FBI should have time to complete a background investigation before the hearing.

The Senate Judiciary Committee should work with professionals to prepare for the hearing.

Take a look at Chuck Grassley and Orrin Hatch and other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee 27 years ago questioning Anita Hill at the Clarence Thomas hearing. Have Hatch’s attitudes about women changed?

Senators need the assistance of professionals in this process-- their job is to advise and consent.
