“Thirty-three years ago today, three Chicago-area high school kids skipped school and decided to go to a Cubs game.

“Movie magic recreates a lot with sound studios and green screen, but one thing that’s harder to fake is an actual MLB game.  In the iconic Wrigley Field scene in 1986’s hit comedy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, John Hughes and Co. used an actual broadcast (which was on TV when Principal Rooney was eating a slice of pizza).

Larry Granillo did a careful frame-by-frame study of the televised game and identified it as the game played June 5, 1985, when the Braves came to Wrigley.

“Though the televised game seen in the movie was played June 5th, the shooting schedule for the movie did not begin until September 1985.  The game shot on location (when Ferris caught a foul ball) was September 24, 1985, when the Expos were at Wrigley.  The second assistant director of the film, Ken Collins, saved Larry Granillo the need to closely study every person in the crowd to identify that game - Ken Collins filled in the date for Larry Granillo.”

Story thanks to Michael Clair and Larry Granillo.

Have we come to this?

In Israel, Rudy Giuliani, reflecting, as President Trump's attorney--

comparing women's looks clearly intending to intimidate other women who could come forward with legitimate cases of sexual harassment and illicit behavior...

and before that, accusing Robert Mueller team of trying to "frame" Donald Trump to politicize the investigation and undermine public confidence in the results...

Have Giuliani and Trump no shame? their style is rogue.

The world watches, listens--

Trump voters smile, shrugging off the chaos...

our nation has gone rogue, alienating our closest allies.

Oh Steve, that was priceless, thank you for pointing it out.  How could he not know the words?  I am speechless . . .almost.

Well, I am at my last several weeks at work, and delighted.  A trip to Asheville happening in July, another trip in October and maybe even in late January.  I am ready to get out more.

Again thanks Steve, I never would have seen it.  I try and stay away from anything where he is quoted, speaking etc.

Trump’s aggressive comments against the NFL players who did not stand during the playing of the national anthem is wrong on many levels. First, this country and its flag stand for freedom—even the freedom to disagree. This is America, where we tolerate and even encourage free expression of ideas and peaceful protest. America does not demand absolute conformity and subservience to the state. This is not China or the old Soviet Union, where non-conformity with the state’s dictates was not tolerated. This is America! We do not, and should not, question the patriotism of those who protest as the NFL players did. It is not necessary that all 48,000 attending an NFL game stand; if some folks want to engage in protest by not standing--that is as American as apple pie.

Furthermore, the only reason Trump is making a big deal out of this is because the players were protesting police misconduct, a topic of which Trump is not concerned.  If the NFL players were protesting the Roe v. Wade decision allowing abortion, does anybody think Mr. Trump would be tweeting to challenge their patriotism?  Trump’s histrionics--wrapping himself in the folds of the flag—threatens our core American values.

What threatens the core of America, is the in action of a treasonous republican house and senate who refuse to defend the constitution.  They are not patriots.

Sad to hear of Angie Panos death. She was a great advisor to the Jr. and Sr. class officers and I greatly appreciated the numerous passes she gave me to get out of class on even the lamest excuse. It was too bad that I never had her for English- I might have gotten a better grade. Also. her husband owned the Henry drive in across from the Maywood race track. May she rest in peace.

Marvin, when you are an employee (as are all pro football players) and the boss says stand for the National Anthem you are insubordinate if you kneel and are subject to discipline.  You are not exercising your 1st Amendment rights..  NFL and  owners have failed to discipline offenders.  And now the fans are punishing them.  Many NFL fans are insulted by the disrespect and are not attending and not viewing  NFL  and ESPN programming.  The free market is passing judgment effectively.  I love attending college football  so far, they have not been corrupted.

Congress is an independent government body.  They are NOT emplolyees of the presidents.  I seem to recall something about checks and balances.

Thanks for the post.  Please continue to post.  As for free speech, of course I support.  I just assumed that Paul might not understand that concept of the constitution.

Europe is flaming after Trump’s disastrous show in Canada.  Can you imagine if any foreign government made confrontational statements at and after a foreign gathering like Donald Trump and his team have about Justin Trudeau. Many Americans are keen to overlook the G7 in their excitement about the shiny object of the Kim Trump “summit”.

By calling for Russia’s return and rescinding his approval for the final statement, Trump showed his true colors at the G7.

Now what?  Trump has shredded Western alliances — just as Putin ordered.

Paul, you overlook all that Trump is doing to undermine our core American values and institutions, and instead you applaud as you latch onto Trump’s histrionics about the NFL and the national anthem.  Trump means to deflect attention from what he’s about.

Americans are fatigued by Trump and have stopped listening and paying attention to what he’s doing-- Congress has abandoned their responsibility of oversight as an independent branch of government-- Americans are “fiddling while the USA burns.”

We are in a time of moral and political crisis.  It is urgent that we hear the voices of alarm speaking out in our nation and on the Forum.

“For he never thought of doing a kindness,

but hounded to death the poor

and the needy and the broken-hearted.

He loved to pronounce a curse--

may it come back on him.

He found no pleasure in blessing--

may it be far from him.

He wore cursing as his garment;

it entered into his body like water,

     into his bones like oil.

May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,

like a belt tied forever around him.”

Psalm 109: 16-19

Good to hear from you, Carol... hope more also post.  In times such as these, we all need to get into the game.

Our national anthem is “The Star Bangled Banner” ... England’s national anthem is “God Save the Queen” ... France’s national anthem is “La Marseillaise” ...

Everything Trump does to shred our western (and Asian) alliances works to Putin’s benefit and only serves to isolate us.  What was once President Reagan’s “shining city on a hill” is no more.

Fox News listeners would be well to watch and listen to international news sources such as BBC and NPR and read sources like The Economist, The Guardian, The London Times before assuming that Donald Trump is doing great things for America in our world.  Anyone who thinks we can go it alone in this world and succeed does not understand the world economy or political reality in this post modern world.

Carol, I agree we are seriously divided as a country, and the last thing we needed was a president who would divide us even more.

I do not blame Donald Trump for being Donald Trump-- he’s been who he is for his whole life-- Donald Trump is out for Donald Trump.

I do hold responsible the people who voted for Donald Trump believing we needed to shake up the world. President Trump’s “unique approach” has done nothing but humiliate and weaken us as a nation.

Check Psalm 109, NIV-- (I’m on the road, but I believe I copied it accurately.)

David is given credit for writing the Psalms-- they are called the Psalms of David, written to and about God.  Psalm 109 is clearly written to God about someone else’s actions.

Please read the entire Psalm.

Carol, I recognize your love of country and for your classmates.  You show the courage of your convictions on the Forum and I respect you for that.  You might find it interesting to know Fox News is a source for me.  I hope you seriously expand to an international news source for perspective.

Many of our classmates seem to appreciate what you consider "not healthy dialog" on the Forum--

our nation is struggling through a time of moral and political crisis-- we must not “fiddle while the USA burns.”

Hope springs eternal that by grappling with these issues we might learn from one another and come to a positive outcome as a class and for our country.

I too wish you and all our classmates well.

Janis

So under the threat of nuclear war, let’s forego military preparedness... there’s an idea.  Why not make the decision unilaterally? without consulting General Mattis and the South Koreans or the Japanese?

After such a satisfying Hackney"s reunion with classmate friends old and new, it seemed wise to let the comments about my last post, #4137 just fade from the discussion board into cheers of support for the critics or vanish in ignominy.  Then I thought, why I appreciate Steve's comments about my character, he demonizes my opinion about free speech as a violation of the Constitution's First Amendment.  So, I decided to answer vitriol with measured words in support of what I said.  Not as wise as a lawyer and only having studied our Constitution's meaning in numerous classes related to my field, education, I share the words of Paul Callan, a lawyer and editorialist for CNN, who published this commentary on September 26 of last year:

One often-heard, but inaccurate, refrain among the talking heads was that the athletes had a "legal right" to peacefully protest in football stadiums across the country because the US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech. "It's a free country" this line of thinking goes, and American soldiers have fought and lost their lives to preserve this sacred right.
The fact is, these athletes do not have the "right" to protest at football games unless their employers consent to the conduct. Their private employers have a legal right under the US Constitution to fire or suspend players who engage in acts of protest on the field during the playing of the National Anthem and the display of Old Glory. Imagine what would happen if some of the TV anchors or commentators decided to "take a knee" during their shows in an act of protest?
My bet is that in most places they would be fired or suspended -- as would protesting bank tellers, store clerks, security guards, restaurant workers or anyone else with a job to do.
Here we have the legal opinion of a liberal lawyer/writer for uber-liberal CNN that supports what I said in #4137.  Maybe, my critics, Steve, Alan and Marvin should rethink what they said about me and my opinion, which I believe is proven to be Constitutional by Mr. Callan.  If the players took a knee or refused to stand on their own time, while not acting in a professional capacity, they would be execrising their First Amendment rights. But they voluntarily waived those rights as NFL contracted employees while on duty.
Marvin, my appologies for attributing a comment made by Alan to you.  As the dust settled from Steve's, Alan's and joined by Marvin, you guys need to rethink what you said about how the First Amendment applies to NFL player/employee behavior.  Nothing personal. you are all great guys, just wrong.

06/13/18 10:32 AM #242

Janis Kliphardt (Emery)

Paul, you are right.  The NFL players’ right to protest is not protected by the first amendment, it is protected by the contract between the owners and the NFL Players’ Association which does not prohibit players from taking a knee during the national anthem.

The owners acknowledged as much in their knee jerk edict which imposes a penalty not on the player but on the team.

The histrionics over the NFL and the national anthem are an insignificant aside-- we continue to miss the forest for the trees-- we are “fiddling while the USA burns.”

i.e. The Department of Justice is not defending the ACA provision that protects people with pre existing conditions from being dropped by their insurers.

Glad the Hackney’s reunion was a good time-- do you have pics?

Hi Janis,

I did not take any pictures, but Sharry did.  Let's urge her to post them for all to see.

I agree that the NFL/ESPN flaps are a distraction from important issues like health care.  It remains as unfinished by Congress, Senate and Administration.  Whether you agree or oppose the Russian Collusion investigation, I think it is safe to say it has focused the attention of America to the exclusion of many weighty issues.  The current Congress and Senate do not seem capable of working together.   I don't think this is how the Founders envisioned the system of government would work.

06/13/18 11:30 AM #244

Janis Kliphardt (Emery)

It’s clear the Founders did not envision a country such as this.

The present House and Senate are working together-- just not for the good of the country.  We wouldn’t need a Mueller investigation if Congress were doing its work.

The Founders gave Congress oversight, the power of the purse, the power to declare war, the power to impeach,... all kinds of power our current Congress refuses to exercise.

I don’t believe our Founders ever imagined our country would elect a “Donald Trump”, but they built in provisions to enable Congress to limit the power of such an executive which our current Congress chooses not to exercise.

A RANT AGAINST SILENCE

Supposedly, it couldn’t happen here. But it has. Donald Trump, a madman, idiot and liar, was elected President as a result of the AWM vote (Any White Male), the HCB vote (Hillary is a Conniving Bitch), and with a little help from his friends, the Russians. In the last week Trump and his cronies have almost literally spit on our closest allies while saying that the most despicable, totalitarian communist ruler on earth, Kim Jong Un, is “talented” and “loves his people.”   When he was asked yesterday, what if he is wrong about Kim Jong Un’s intentions, Trump said, “I don’t know if I’ll ever admit that, but I’ll find some kind of an excuse.”

We have another 3.5 years of this lunacy. We have to resist. Silence is unacceptable. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “there comes a time when silence is betrayal.”  Here are some suggestions on what we can do:

  1. When you hear a wacko statement, do not let it go without protest. Example: Your neighbor says he just heard that Hillary and George Soros have opened another pizza parlor in Washington D.C. and they are raping children in the basement. Suggested response: “Now Pete, while Hillary and Soros may be devils on earth, they are not raping children in pizza parlors. I’m sure if we do a little fact digging we’ll find it was Bill Clinton.”
  2. Listen to the news.  ABC, CBS, MNBC, and Fox. When you hear something ridiculous, send a letter to the station’s sponsor. Example:  Sean Hannity said recently: “And by the way, if the media, if you have more proof that this is not a witch hunt, OK, I don’t believe you.”  Send a letter to his sponsor saying, “What kind of idiot says he doesn’t believe new evidence without first reviewing it?”
  3. If a media commentator says something that makes sense, like Laura Ingraham just did about getting rid of Scott Pruitt, tell her sponsor that she done right.
  4.  Give some money to the Democrats. This is important. To help Democratic congressional candidates in November, send money now to DCCC, PO Box 96039, Washingto D.C. 20077-7243.
  5. Send a letter to the editor. Example:  “I think President Trump is wrong in advocating that Russia should re-gain entry to the G-7. Russia invaded Crimea and Ukraine and that’s why they were ousted from the G-8. Why would we let them back in? And why would we propose to let them back in to G-7 when they are still fucking with our electoral process?????  And why does the president implement tariffs against Canada, Mexico, Japan and the EU nations and NOT RUSSIA?????????”
  6. Bottom line:  Do not be silent. Let your voice be heard. Silence is betrayal.
