Robin was a Lincolnwood girl.  She lived on Chase between Crawford, Skokie Blvd. and Touhy Ave.  She was not allowed to cross those big streets in 4 th grade. Therefore, Robin got stuck playing with the girls in the big square.  In the big square were Donna, Sharry, Donna Zenner,  Mickey Fredson, (younger) and Leslie Paul. (She moved away in 7 grade).

Robin didn't like playing, going outside or riding her bike.  She always want us to come over to her house and be mean to her sisters. She wanted to drive her mother crazy, because all she wanted to do was cross those big streets.  At the end of 5th grade, we were able to cross Crawford and play with Beverly Cowan and Pam Goldberg. Robin's first crush was Charles Brill.  A new world opened up to Robin. She became a free 5th grader.  By 7th grade we could all go to the neighborhood deli, Normies, for a coke and fries. Robin felt like she had entered a new world.  She could eat in a restaurant without her mother.

Robin had the habit of sucking her thumb and holding her bra strap.  She knew it bothered everyone.  Robin never cared what anyone thought.  She'd do as she pleased. She didn't care if you liked her or not.  However, everyone did like Robin. She was a person who was fun to be around.  She was like a surprise party in a box.  When we became 15, I made a deal with Robin to give up the thumb and bra for cigarettes.  Robin, Beverly, and I were the first to smoke and added several hundreds new smokers along  the way.

in high school Robin matured faster then me.  She was into boys, dating, and parties. I was into sports, making new friends, and thinking iof ways of not going to school. Could I miss the bus again. Robin and I were just school friends and just nodded in the hall. She was now dating older guys and I was trying to figure out why girls couldn't play sports.

In 1973 our first reunion committee was formed.  Robin was on the committee. Robin was fun, entertaining, and a hard worker. Since seeing Robin, she married Joel Handelmam, had two children, bought a house in Evanston, and became active in JUF.  She also enjoyed golf and repeat visits to Israel with JUF.

the one thing I learned from Robin in 1973., that she lost something special in high  school.  She was proud of of her independence and gave several of us the details and facts. I can't believe this was going on, while I was stealing garbage can tops, and putting them on people's lawns., and missing classes. My mother was right.  I was immature and foolish.  To this day I know all your secrets and you knew mine.  You were one of a kind.....very unique and special.

One summer day, June 1993, Sharon Rodnick and I were meeting Jerry Gary Rodman for a drink at Hackneys on Lake. Robin was sitting at the bar waiting for her husband, Joel.  Robin looked like the picture of success.  She was pretty, happy, played a great round of golf that day. Sharon and I didn't look that good.  However, we were happy to see our old friend, club sister, and neighbor's glow.

This was my last sighting of Robin. We ran in different suburban groups. Rumor is she battled cancer but Im not sure. I know for sure that Robin Rand will always be remembered as someone everyone loved.

To this day, I remember the sucking of the thrumb and "nootching" with her bra strap.  I have shared the story of Robin with my grandchildren that are thumb suckers.
