Janis Kliphardt (Emery)
In 1958-59 I lived in Khartoum, Sudan; our family visited what is now South Sudan for the month of December 1958.
Yesterday (televised today) LeBron James and the American Olympic basketball team again faced South Sudan's Bright Stars in a rematch on the Olympic basketball court.
(Sunday South Sudan earned their first-ever Olympic men's basketball victory when they defeated Puerto Rico 90-79.)
Team USA defeated South Sudan 103-86.
I watched the game with three grandsons - they were all cheering for Team USA. They understood my split loyalty and shared my awe for the Bright Stars.
Today in 2024, half of South Sudan's population is 18 years and younger.
The Bright Stars were in the game, but they fell short of the performance they wanted:
Though Team USA held a fluctuating lead throughout the game, it was clear, South Sudan's opponent could not relax and expect to win.
